I’m somewhat unhappy to report that I related to the protagonist, but maybe that fact kept me engaged with the film. It’s about people overcoming their traumas that haunt and slow down their lives. It’s fun at times, but in general not a fun film. Marnie has to be one of the weirder films I have seen any time recently. But by this point I give Ghibli the benefit of the doubt on a lot of stuff, and maybe that’s PART of the reason that “Marnie” was really able to resonate with me. There are times where some plot elements feel flimsy or all-too-convenient, and I can certainly understand some people’s complaints about the film’s pacing. I certainly had some complaints by the end. I’m not sure I knew what to expect with “When Marnie Was There”. I’m happily watching the last few Ghibli films I have never seen and re-watching the ones that I have seen.
